Mark the Master Calendar

Figuring out what to do and when to do it just got easier. Thanks to a new version of the UI Master Calendar of Events, it’s a snap to check out activities that range from Bijou movies and microbiology lectures to field hockey tournaments and poetry readings.

And it’s also now easier to increase campus awareness about activities your department may be planning.

“People work hard to plan an event, and if no one knows about it, no one will come,” says Penny Kaelber, manager of the University’s Campus Information Center and the “keeper” of the Master Calendar. “Posting an event on the Master Calendar helps the campus community learn about what you’ve planned.”

News in brief

A group of researchers at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business is using the principles of more efficient manufacturing processes in an effort to help contain ever-increasing health care costs.

“Whether you’re talking about health care or manufacturing, ‘Lean’ manufacturing provides a framework to systematically improve service and lower costs,” says Barrett Thomas, assistant professor of management sciences in the Tippie College and a Lean expert.

Minnetta Gardinier
  Minnetta Ga
Since she was a young girl, Minn-
etta Gardinier has found allure in the wild blue yonder. Gardinier, associate dean for graduate recruitment and professional development in the Graduate College, and associate professor of pharmacology in the Carver College of Medicine, got her pilot’s license six years ago, and even co-owns a 1978 single-engine Cessna Cardinal Classic airplane. Gardinier forgets the stresses of academia when she pulls the plane out of the hangar and taxis down the runway to take off into blue skies and drill holes through the clouds at 8,000 feet.

"These women have had nothing. Now we'll have one of the best in the Big Ten."

Jane Meyer, senior associate director of athletics (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Sept. 17)
