A new program at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine provides a unique learning experience for a group of college professors from around Iowa.

This summer, seven faculty from undergraduate colleges across the state served as the inaugural faculty fellows of the FUTURE (Fostering Undergraduate Talent—Uniting Research and Education) in Biomedicine Program. The initiative is building a network of scientists and science educators to benefit undergraduate science education and strengthen biomedical research in Iowa.

New database allows hiring departments to find furloughed employees to fill positions

UI Human Resources is reaching out to assist professional and scientific (P&S) employees whose positions have been eliminated through no fault of their own to find new employment within the University.

A new database created by HR Compensation and Classification allows P&S employees who have received a furlough notice to post their employment information for hiring departments to review. Using the database, departments can now review a summary of the furloughed employee’s education, experience, and skills, as well as a complete résumé.

Larry Lock-
wood was twice wounded in action in Vietnam; the second time, he lost his right foot and suffered other major injuries after stepping on a landmine. Instead of letting the experience limit his life, Lockwood has used his empathy and insights to help other veterans over the years, ensuring they have what they need to succeed in higher education. Lockwood, who has served as assistant provost for enrollment services in the Office of the Registrar at The University of Iowa for the past seven years, spoke with fyi about his job duties, his motivation, and the likely spike in veteran enrollment at Iowa.

"It’s been a year of generosity, and in a time that’s difficult, we appreciate that."

Lynette Marshall, president of the University of Iowa Foundation (The Des Moines Register, Aug. 16)
