University employees banding together to Live Healthy in 2009

Annabell Hullana

The winter weather doesn’t stop Annabelle Hullana from exercising over her lunch hour. Not now that she has a team of health-minded office mates to rally and motivate her.

Hullana, a counselor in the University of Iowa Office of Admissions, and her coworkers were among the more than 400 University of Iowa employees who signed up for Lighten Up Iowa—now Live Healthy Iowa—in 2008. The statewide program challenges teams of two to 10 adults to help each other form healthy habits in order to achieve fitness and weight loss goals.

Many of the admissions team’s participants kept up their healthy habits all year long, and are signing up for the challenge again in 2009. This year, they’re setting new fitness goals, including training for RiverRun, a 5K or 10K run/walk held annually on the UI campus in late April.

Does the University ever take a snow day?

Chances are pretty good you’ll wake up on an Iowa winter morning to find there’s a foot of snow on the ground, the white stuff is still coming down, and the mercury in your thermometer has fallen way below zero. Local elementary and secondary school classes have been canceled.

How do you find out about University cancellations?

Where can you see animals from almost every continent and order? In Mammal Hall, located in the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History. Specimens from aardvark to zebra are represented, with many animals collected by University of Iowa faculty and students during expeditions around the world.

Mick Wells
  Mickey Wells
If fyi editors decided to travel a road more sensational, we might say that Mick Wells dabbles in drugs and rock 'n' roll, but that probably conjures up the wrong image. But Wells, director of recently established University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals, does lead the College of Pharmacy's drug development and manufacturing division. And he does own 14 guitars and worships Eddie Van Halen. fyi caught up with the UI alumnus to discuss what led him to a career in pharmaceuticals, his experience working with the drug Wellbutrin, and how often he finds time to bend some strings.

"It's a nice boost in sales, no doubt about that."

Richard Shannon
(Cedar Rapids Gazette, Dec. 20)
