Klein: Staff Council is University's voice

Kathy Klein, Staff Council president. Photo by Tom Jorgensen.

Kathy Klein started at The University of Iowa in 1966 working as a travel clerk in the business office. Today, she is the second merit staff member to serve as president of Staff Council. In between, Klein has worked in the student activities office during the height of campus unrest over the war in Vietnam, left the University to stay home and raise her children, and returned to the University in staff support roles across campus. This is her seventh year on Staff Council.

Klein sat down with fyi to discuss Staff Council's role in University transition, her goals for the upcoming year, and the need for staff members to have a voice within the University.

Learning and Development May/June schedule

Carol Severino
There was a time when the Writing Center at The University of Iowa was a twice-a-week tutoring option available only to students. But under the watch of director Carol Severino, the center now boasts an e-mail tutoring business, expanded hours, and five satellite centers. All the while, Severino finds time for travel and recreation. Severino talks with fyi about her career, her family, and her desire to play the drums.

“We can employ all the latest technology and marketing strategies to get our message conveyed to prospective students, parents, and school officials. But one can't beat the value of a consistent message that clearly conveys the values of our institution.”

Michael Barron
